Global Mental Health Support: Why Covering Languages Isn't Enough

Global mental health support means every employee (in every country you operate) can get the same quality of care, in their language, from a professional who understands their world. Covering a lot of countries is the easy part. Making the care feel local to each employee is the hard part. Here's how Kyan Health does it.

What global support means for a multinational workforce

Most mental health providers solve coverage.

They translate their app, add counselors and coaches in many countries, and call it global. But coverage only tells you that care is available. Whether people use it depends on what they find when they open the app: a language they're comfortable in, and a professional who understands where they come from.

Three things decide that. The languages inside the product. Who is really in the provider network of counsellors, coaches, and other mental health experts. And whether the experience was adapted for each market or only translated into it.

What makes Kyan's mental health support feel local

  • 36+ languages in the Kyan Care app. The full experience in each one, not a reduced version for smaller markets. And because of how the platform is built, adding a new language takes less time than you'd expect.

Two smartphones show app screens: language selection (Spanish, Chinese, English, German, Italian) and a Spanish wellness check-in.

  • A network of around 140,000 counselors and coaches across 200 countries and regions, covering 120+ languages. Employees set their language preferences during onboarding and get matched accordingly. They can change those preferences whenever they want, or ask Kai, Kyan's in-app AI companion, for something specific. Employees also read the profiles of counsellors and coaches themselves: languages spoken, areas of expertise, clinical specialization, and how the person works. Some experts record a short introduction video in their own language, so an employee can see and hear them before deciding. Once an employee picks an expert to talk to, they can book instantly with sessions starting within 3 business days.

  • 1,000+ hours of self-care resources, in every language. Self-care resources are the meditations, articles, and exercises employees can access on their own, developed alongside clinical psychologists. Native speakers review each translation. And where a language is spoken across several regions, the translation uses one specific variety rather than averaging across them: the one that matches most of the people reading it. The material itself is built to hold up across different work cultures, which is what lets the same exercise work in every market.

  • Kai speaks differently in each language. Kai's tone is reviewed by native speakers too, and it changes by market. In Japanese, combative verbs don't land well, so the wording is about working with stress rather than fighting it, and sitting with frustration rather than controlling it. In Hindi, Kai's usual warm and informal tone reads as disrespectful in a professional wellbeing conversation, so it does the opposite.

  • Regional expertise on your side too. Customer success managers are assigned by region, so the person helping you launch and manage your mental health benefit has a deep understanding of work culture in your area, not just of the product.

Why this shows up in your utilization numbers

When an employee opens their company's mental health platform for the first time, they're answering one question: is this made for someone like me? They look at the language, the self-care resources, and who is available to talk to. If the answer is no, no launch plan or reminder email will fix it. When the answer is yes, people stay. And that's the case with Kyan Health: the platform sees around 30% sustained member engagement, about 10 times the rate of a traditional EAP.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do employees in different time zones get support?

The Kyan Care app is available 24 hours a day, so employees can open Kai and the self-care resources at any hour, wherever they are. For sessions with a person, Kyan Health's network of around 140,000 counselors and coaches spans 200 countries and regions, so employees can book inside their own working hours. Customer success managers are assigned in the client's time zone too.

The quality of care is the same everywhere. What is switched on can differ by region, because Kyan Health is modular and the employer decides the mix. One region might get self-care resources, Kai, and work-life services. Another might add coaching, or counseling on top of that. HR can match the program to local needs and budget instead of buying one package for every country.

Kyan Health's operations team onboards new professionals into the network to close the gap. Every provider goes through the same vetting process regardless of language or market, so adding a language does not mean lowering the bar. The same applies to backgrounds: if a workforce needs a profile the network doesn't cover well yet, Kyan Health sources it.
